Working from home? VPN - Virtual Private Network - offers a secure connection to the network of the University of Basel. Regardless of whether you are sitting at a desktop or on the road with your laptop, you can use VPN to access internal university resources or, via the university network, external resources that can only be accessed from the university network (e.g. online journals). If, on the other hand, you want to view web pages, the simple WebVPN service is usually sufficient. For full access, your computer can become part of the network of the University of Basel via a so-called VPN tunnel. In order to establish such a connection, a special software (VPN Client) has to be installed. This software is available for Windows, macOS and Linux. On this page you will find instructions on how to connect to WebVPN and install the VPN client on your personal device. When connecting via VPN, the directives of the Rectorate on the use of IT resources apply.
To uninstall the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client that we have offered before, please use the appropriate uninstallation instruction on this page.
During the changeover, we made a conscious decision to have the VPN client connect automatically for employees, regardless of the device. (Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are excluded). However, the automatic connection can of course be deactivated manually. To do this, please click on the “Disconnect” button in the GlobalProtect client. After a “Disconnect”, the client must be reconnected manually, even after a restart. Detailed information can be found in the knowledge database.
Yes, with the changeover to GlobalProtect we have made some changes to the authentication process. You can now only log in with your e-mail address.
Please send the relevant website and the reason for use as a ticket to the Service Desk or request the exception rule directly via NetSec.
Both VPN clients can be installed on your end device, this is not a problem. A simultaneous connection of both clients can lead to problems. Therefore, please ensure that only one client establishes a connection at a time.
In order to make working with the VPN client as easy as possible for all users, we have decided not to offer any separate connection options. This also ensures greater security.
No, GlobalProtect automatically recognizes the change and directly establishes a VPN connection to the university network.
Please report the relevant problems with GlobalProtect as a support ticket directly to the Service Desk.
A client update is typically available every 3-6 months and is automatically installed on your client (Windows and Mac) as soon as you have logged in. Under Linux, you will receive a message after logging in with information on where you can download the new GlobalProtect client.
All employees and external service providers of the University of Basel can access local network devices such as the private printer without having to disconnect from GlobalProtect.
Yes, for the employees of the University of Basel we have deliberately decided that the VPN client will connect automatically. The GlobalProtect client connects to the university network, but no VPN connection is established. You can find detailed information on this in the knowledge database.
In order for the client to start, there must be space available in the Mac menu bar (top right) for the “icon”. If the menu bar is full, something must be closed or removed so that the GlobalProtect client can be started.
