Preparation
Ensure that the Microsoft Authenticator app is installed on your smartphone, or install the app from the appropriate app store:

As an alternative to the MS Authenticator app, other apps can be used.
- Authy: Apple App Store / Google Play Store
- Google Authenticator: Apple App Store / Google Play Store
- FreeOTP Authenticator : Apple App Store / Google Play Store
- Lastpass: Apple App Store / Google Play Store
These apps do not offer all the functionalities compared to the MS Authenticator app (push method). Support for the use of these alternative apps cannot be guaranteed by IT Services.
Activation
- Open a new 'private' window in your browser (name and procedure differ depending on the Internet browser used).
- Copy the following link https://aka.ms/mfasetup into the new browser window and confirm it with <ENTER>.
- You will be redirected to the Microsoft login portal.
- Identify yourself with your Unibas mail address at the Microsoft login portal.
- You will be redirected to the login screen of the University of Basel.
- Enter your password.
- Select 'Next'.
- Select 'Next'.
- Select 'Next'.
- The QR code for configuring the smartphone is displayed.
- Launch the 'Microsoft Authenticator App' on your smartphone. If the app has never been launched, follow the steps below:
- Click 'OK' at the privacy message.
- Select 'Scan QR code'.
- Allow the app to access your camera by clicking 'OK'.
- If the app has already been launched once, follow the steps below:
- Click on the 'Menu item' (three vertical dots) at the top right of the screen.
- Select '+ Add account'.
- Select 'Scan QR code'.
- Scan the QR code using the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- A message is sent to the smartphone for verification.
- Approve the login on your smartphone.
- The successful approval is confirmed.
- A notification appears on the computer that the configuration has been completed successfully.
- Two-Step Login' is activated after 15 minutes at the latest.
In order to be able to change the smartphone more easily, we recommend additionally storing the telephone number. This is described under "Store additional phone number (SMS/call)".

- You will be redirected to the Microsoft login portal.
- Identify yourself with your Unibas mail address at the Microsoft login portal.
- You will be redirected to the login screen of the University of Basel.
- Enter your password.
- Select 'Next'.
- Select 'I want to set up another method'.
- Select 'Phone'.
- Select 'Next'.
- Select the country of your provider.
- Enter your mobile number without leading '0'.
- Make sure that 'Send code to me by SMS' is activated.
- Select 'Next
- You will receive a text message (SMS) from Microsoft to your mobile device with the verification code.
- Enter the verification code you received.
- Select 'Next'.
- You will receive a message about the successful registration of your mobile phone.
- If the registration of the security information is successful, you will also receive a corresponding message.
- By default, a phone call is the default notification method. You must change this setting in the 'Security information' if you prefer to receive an SMS.
- To do this, click on 'Change' under 'Default notification method'.
- Change the default notification method to 'Phone SMS'.
- Open a new 'private' window in your browser (name and procedure differ depending on the Internet browser used).
- Copy the following link https://aka.ms/mfasetup into the new browser window and confirm it with <ENTER>.
- You will be redirected to the Microsoft login portal.
- Identify yourself with your Unibas mail address at the Microsoft login portal.
- You will be redirected to the login screen of the University of Basel.
- Enter your password.
- Select 'Next'.
- Select 'I want to set up another method'.
- Select 'Phone'.
- Select 'Next'.
- Select the country of your provider.
- Enter your mobile number or the number at your workplace without a leading '0'.
- Make sure that 'Call me' is activated.
- Select 'Next
- You will receive an automated call from Microsoft to the telephone number you provided for verification purposes.
- Answer the call and confirm the call according to the announcement with the '#' key.
- You will receive a message about the successful registration of your given phone number.
- If the registration of the security information is successful, you will also receive a corresponding message.
- Open a new 'private' window in your browser (names and procedure differ depending on the internet browser you are using).
- Copy the following link https://aka.ms/mfasetup into the new browser window and confirm it with <ENTER>.
- You will be redirected to the Microsoft login portal.
- Identify yourself with your Unibas mail address at the Microsoft login portal.
- You will be redirected to the login screen of the University of Basel.
- Enter your password.
- Select 'Add method'.
- Select 'Phone', 'Phone (business)' or 'Alternative phone number'.
- Confirm the selection with 'Add'.
- Select the country of your provider.
- Enter your phone number without leading '0'.
- Make sure that 'Send code to me by SMS' is activated.
- Select 'Next'.
- You will receive a text message (SMS) from Microsoft to your mobile device with the verification code.
- Enter the "Captcha" code that appears.
- Enter the verification code you received.
- Select 'Next'.
- Select 'Next'.
- The additional phone number is added.
- Call up the desired application (e.g. services.unibas.ch).
- You will be redirected to the login screen of the University of Basel.
- Enter your Unibas user name or e-mail address and your password.
You will be asked for the 'Two-Step Login'. The default method you have defined is displayed.
If you have configured several methods, you can also select a different method for verification by clicking on 'Use a different verification method'. The next time you log in, you will be asked again for the defined default method.
- You are now logged in to the application.
