c) To install eduroam via CAT (automatic configuration), you need an internet connection. You can also access the eduroam CAT page via the "unibas-public" network without VPN. To use eduroam, you must be within range of the "eduroam" Wi-Fi network at the University of Basel or another institution participating in eduroam.
d) You are using a current and still supported Linux distribution that uses NetworkManager for connection management. These instructions describe the setup with NetworkManager. Alternative configurations with wpa_supplicant may be possible, but are not covered here.

Connect to the internet using any network, for example your internet access at home or "unibas-public".
In your web browser, go to https://cat.eduroam.org and click on "Click here to download your eduroam installer".

A list of the closest eduroam home institutions to your location will be displayed. Search for the University of Basel and select it.
On the following page, download the "Configuration Assistant Tool" (CAT) by clicking on Linux.
The CAT installer is a Python script (.py). It tries to set up eduroam for NetworkManager if it is available on your system. If NetworkManager is not available or is too old, a wpa_supplicant configuration file will be created instead.
The installer will create an "eduroam" subdirectory in your personal folder and copy the server certificates there.
To connect to the network for the first time, you need your user data according to the University of Basel master data sheet. During the installation, you will be asked for your user name and password. This information will be saved so that you can automatically establish a secure connection to the eduroam network in the future.
If you have downloaded the file eduroam-linux-University_Basel.py, you need to make it executable. To do this, open a terminal and change to your download folder using "cd Downloads/". Then run "sudo chmod +x FILE_NAME" for the downloaded eduroam file to make it executable.

You can open the file via "Open with" using your Linux installer or run it with the command "./FILE_NAME". If this command does not work, you can alternatively run "python3 FILE_NAME" to explicitly start the file with Python.
Important: Double-clicking the file may open an editor instead of the installer.

Confirm with "OK".

First enter your UniBas email address as UserID.

Now enter your UniBas password. You will be prompted twice for security reasons.

The installation is now successfully completed ("OK").
Contact the ServiceDesk if the automatic installation with CAT fails or is not supported by your system.
