VPN access will no longer be possible with Windows 10 from 15 October 2026

Windows 10 reaches the end of support Microsoft ceased regular support for Windows 10 on 15 October 2025. This means that regular security updates will no longer be provided for the operating system. Devices that continue to run Windows 10 may therefore pose an increased security risk – both to the users themselves and to the University of Basel’s IT infrastructure.

Blocking VPN access for Windows 10 devices

From 15 October 2026, it will no longer be possible to access the University of Basel’s VPN service using personal devices running Windows 10.

This measure is intended to protect the University’s IT infrastructure and the data processed on it.

 

What do you need to do?

If you wish to continue using the University of Basel’s VPN service with a personal Windows device, the following options are available to you:

1. Upgrade to Windows 11

Update your device to Windows 11, provided the hardware meets the minimum requirements.

2. Purchase a new device

If your current device does not meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11, we recommend that you purchase a new device that is compatible with Windows 11.

 

Please ensure that any personal devices you use to access the University of Basel’s VPN service are updated to a supported operating system by 15 October 2026 at the latest.
